With hCaptcha support in the Password Protected plugin, you can add an extra layer of defense to your login pages and password screens, keeping your content safe without compromising user experience. It helps protect your site from bots, spam, and automated attacks while respecting user privacy. It works by presenting visitors with simple human-verification challenges, ensuring only legitimate users can proceed.

Accessing hCAPTCHA Settings in Password Protected

To begin, log in to your WordPress site and navigate to Password Protected » Security. Next, select the CAPTCHA tab.

To configure, select the hCaptcha option from the Captcha settings. Once selected, the relevant configuration fields will appear below for you to enter your Site Key and Secret Key.

Generating hCAPTCHA Keys

  • To get started, visit the free hCaptcha key to generate the Site Key and Secret Key.
  • Sign up for hCaptcha using your Google account, GitHub account, or simply with your email address.
  • If you’re creating an hCaptcha account for the first time, you’ll be redirected to the Welcome page immediately after signing up. Click Generate to get your Secret Key, then click Continue.
  • If you already have an hCaptcha account, you’ll be redirected to your dashboard, where you can generate new keys at any time by clicking the Add Site button.
  • In the Name field within the Basic Info section, enter a label for the particular Site. This name is for your internal reference and will not be shown to users on the frontend.
  • Then, under the Domains section, enter the URL of the websites where you want to activate hCaptcha.
  • Next, in the hCaptcha Behavior section, choose the default CAPTCHA behavior. By default, the mode is Always Challenge, which means users will see a CAPTCHA challenge before submitting a form on your website.
  • Passive mode works silently in the background, assigning a risk score to each submission and blocking potential spam without showing challenges to users. (Note: Passive and 99% Passive modes require a paid hCaptcha account.)
  • Next, configure the Passing Threshold to control challenge difficulty. Higher thresholds show more complex challenges, while lower ones are easier. For best results, select Auto, which adjusts difficulty based on user behavior for a balance of security and usability.
  • Once you’ve finished configuring your settings, scroll down and click the Save button at the bottom of the screen to apply your changes.
  • After saving, you’ll be redirected to the site page, where all your Site Keys are listed. To quickly copy the Site Key you just created, simply click on its name in the list.
  • Alternatively, click anywhere on the Site Key’s row to open its detailed settings. Under the Sitekey section, click the copy icon to copy your full Site Key.
  • Now, to get your Secret Key, open the hCaptcha dashboard, click your avatar in the top-right corner, and select Settings from the account menu.
  • Next, under the Secret section, click the Generate New Secret button to create your Secret Key.

Configuring hCAPTCHA for Your Site

After you’ve done, head back to the Password Protected » Captcha settings page and paste each key into its corresponding Site Key and Secret Key field.

Remember: Click Save Changes to apply your settings.
