Google reCAPTCHA

Estimated reading: 4 minutes 447 views

Google reCAPTCHA is a leading anti-bot security solution designed to protect your WordPress site from spam, brute-force attacks, and automated abuse. Adding Google reCAPTCHA to your Password Protected lock screen ensures that only genuine human visitors can attempt to enter your protected content.

Whether you’re securing your entire WordPress site, specific pages, WooCommerce products, or the WP-Admin login, Google reCAPTCHA acts as your first line of defense against unwanted automated access.

Accessing Google reCAPTCHA Settings in Password Protected

  • To get started, you’ll need to log in to your WordPress site and go to Password Protected » Security. Then, click on the CAPTCHA tab.

Generating reCAPTCHA Keys in Google

  • Next, set up reCAPTCHA in your Google account to generate the required Site Key and Secret Key. Proceed by clicking Google reCAPTCHA Admin Console.
  • You’ll be prompted to sign in to your Google account. The dashboard you see after logging in will vary depending on whether you’ve previously registered any reCAPTCHA projects under this account.
  • If you’ve previously set up reCAPTCHA with this account, click the + (plus) icon to register a new site.
Enabling password protection for a WordPress page
  • If you’re setting up reCAPTCHA for the first time, you’ll be directed straight to the setup form. Simply click the Get Started button.

Register your site where you want to use reCAPTCHA by adding a label & reCAPTCHA type.

Label: Visible only to you. Enter a name that helps you identify this setup, typically your website’s name.

reCAPTCHA Type: Choose the reCAPTCHA version you want to use for this site.

  • Score-based (v3): Verifies requests by assigning a score, allowing you to define a threshold for suspicious activity.
  • Challenge (v2): Displays the classic “I’m not a robot” checkbox for human verification.
  • Challenge (v2): Runs validation in the background with an Invisible reCAPTCHA badge, minimizing user interaction. See reCAPTCHA site types for more details.
Editing WordPress page visibility settings
  • Domains: Enter the domain where reCAPTCHA will be used. Do not include “http://”, “https://”, and “www” (e.g., use passwordprotected.com instead of https://passwordprotected.com or www.passwordprotected.com).
  • Google Cloud Platform: If you’re new to Google Cloud, a project will be created automatically. If you already have existing projects, select the appropriate one from the Project Name dropdown.
  • Click Submit to save your changes.

Score Threshold (for reCAPTCHA v3 only):

reCAPTCHA v3 returns a score for each request:

  • 1.0 → Very likely a good interaction (human).
  • 0.0 → Very likely a bot.

If the score is less than or equal to your defined threshold, the form submission will be blocked, and the error message “The CAPTCHA was not entered correctly” will be displayed.

Badge Position

Choose where you want the reCAPTCHA badge to appear on your site (Inline, Bottom Left, Bottom Right)

Remember: Click Save Changes to apply your settings.
